Chelan: April 9th-12th, 2009

Posted by on Apr 15, 2009

This last weekend was a wink into the life that will be, very soon.

Jon, Richard and I cleared fallen windbreak trees from the Sesto Cielo vineyard in Chelan this last weekend. We weren’t all too efficient, in light of weenie craftsman chainsaws and a little sewing machine of a tractor. But none the less, we were given a glorious glimpse into the life of a vineyard manager, from the urban perspective, of course. The first day was nice. Slightly overcast, but warm enough to work on the farmer’s tan.

Our neighbor’s dogs Star and Kujo* stopped by. I guess their owner Anselmo, the previous orchard manager for the lot, is out of town until the 15th of April. He’s off to his homeland Mexico. So we’ll be unable to meet him and tap into his knowledge of the irrigation system on the land until another time.

Wow, ten acres is overwhelming. One can’t even see the bottom from the top or the top from the bottom for that matter. But, I’ve declared that the best way to go about it is to clear the whole thing with a real John Deere tractor and roto-tiller. (I’m sure that’s another urban dream for rural life, but a place to start.) Then we’ll lay a nice clover ground cover to keep the incessant Chelan dust down. At that point we’ll know where to put things and where the irrigation rows will go. Sounds like a plan to me.

Now what kind of windbreak do we go for anyway?
