Blending Merlot

After agonizing over the perfect balance of flavors and structure through blending trials, we decided on our final blending recipe for our 2007 Merlot. We moved aging wine out of our shiny tank to make room for this newest creation. After the usual cleaning ritual, I began the blending process alone one evening. I would be bulldoggin solo this night.

And everything would have gone perfectly fine and good except for the bad luck of running the nitrogen tank empty part way through the transfer. The transfer line is heavy enough when full of wine that if I had let go, I would have lost the seal on the bulldog and 50 gallons of nitrogen into the room. Thankfully, somebody heard my yelp and spotted me while the tank was switched.

The lovely purple lines mean fruit flavors are mingling. We’ll let these wines get comfortable together for a short while before we bottle.
