Happy New Year!

With one last chance to challenge the limits of fine wine before a fresh start, we offer you a very special New Year’s Eve cocktail. I love Champagne any time, but it has to be in my glass on this one day of the year just before midnight. But what to drink for the frenzied lead up? We chose our 2008 Firá Chardonnay as a base for this bubbly pear Champé.

The Supplies:

Firá Chardonnay

Pear Vodka

White Grape Juice

Club Soda

Fresh Ginger Root

Lemon

[If you can't find Pear Vodka or want a fun project for the kids, you can make your own pear infusion by putting three large Bosc pears (rinsed, sliced, and seeded) in a jar with 1 bottle of quality vodka. Seal tightly and store in a cool, dark place for 1 month.]

The Steps:

Chill all liquids. Mix 1 bottle chardonnay with 5/8 cup vodka, 1/2 cup juice, 1 cup soda, the juice from the lemon, and a teaspoon freshly grated ginger. After several minutes, strain out ginger. Serve cold to good friends. Although it may seem like we’re covering up the subtle flavors in a nice wine, the other ingredients were chosen to complement the flavors of pear/apple and citrus already in the wine. It was a fun experiment.

Here’s to a great 2010.
