Our portfolio of wines includes several labels such as the Kamari Black Label Reserve, the roller derby inspired My Derby Wife label, and the original debut Firá label. Each label is designed by our winemaker Angela with intention and inspiration, then filled with hand-crafted wine from carefully selected vineyard sites from all over Washington State.
WineGirl Wines is the name of the portfolio of our different wine labels. Since WineGirl had decided to make wine in 1998, she had had plenty of time to dream up different wine label imagery. All of the label ideas were due in part to WineGirl’s childhood repression due to the inability to communicate the artistic images in her mind via traditional visual media such as painting or drawing. (Trust me there really is a stick figure gene.)
Then along came graphic design software and WineGirl was finally able to put her imaginations to paper! The first such imagery arrived on a now retired label, the φηρα. (Image to be scanned and included as we update our website over the month of June 2011.)
Then came the Firá Label. Fira is the name of the ancient Greek town that WineGirl was visiting at the time she had decided to make wine. Fira means fire in Greek for the fire sign that WineGirl is and the firey, sassy nature of her personality.
It’s often said that I burn my candle at both ends, for better or for worse. -Angela
Fira is also on the Greek island of Santorini which is an active volcano submersed beneath the depth of the Mediterranean Sea. The caldera or rim of the volcano is the only land mass above the water and inhabited by the local Greeks. Thus, Fira, meaning fire is appropriate for a volcano that erupts regularly disturbing the life of the island and for and ambitious, high-energy winemaker.
When WineGirl was able to source organic and sustainably grown grapes with a very extracted, full-bodied wine profile she decided it was time to develop a reserve label. Thus the Kamari Black Label reserve was born. Kamari is the name of a black sand beach on the same island of Santorini in Greece thus complemented the Fira label in that respect, but the elegance and baroqe nature of the design lends itself to a classier, more elegant wine and label than the Fira label.
Then, roller derby happened. For four years WineGirl skated for the Rat City Rollergirls in Seattle, WA. So naturally, combining her two passions of making wine and making tough girls whine culminated in the My Derby Wife label featuring artwork by Krystof Nemeth.
